Big-time backing helps Newton to play his Part
WES Newton has been given a boost ahead of darts' Stan James World Matchplay in Blackpool after sealing a major sponsorship deal.
The 29-year-old from Fleetwood will make his eagerly-awaited debut at the Winter Gardens spectacular on Sunday, when he faces John Part on the opening evening.
He reached the semi-finals at the Las Vegas Desert Classic for the second successive year earlier this month and has seen his rise rewarded with a sponsorship from Unicorn.
The leading dart and board suppliers already sponsor world champions Phil Taylor, Part, John Lowe and Bob Anderson, as well as defending World Matchplay champion Colin Lloyd.
Newton, now ranked world no.21, will be part of Unicorn's Contender range, marketed alongside Adrian Lewis and James Wade as a future star of the sport.
Newton is due to warm-up for the World Matchplay with a challenge match against the biggest name in the game, Phil Taylor, at the Thornton Sport and Social Club, Holly Road, on Thursday evening (7.45pm).
The pair are on a second-round collision course at the Winter Gardens, provided Newton can defeat Desert Classic winner Part and "The Power" overcomes Anderson.
The first-round matches are over the best of 19 legs.
